Why bilingual books work
Bilingual books let children check meaning in a stronger language and peek into the other with confidence. Shared reading of any kind supports language, attention, and connection—especially when you pause to chat about what’s happening or how a character feels.
Choice matters too. Motivation rises when children see “mirrors and windows”—stories that reflect their life and open onto others. How to choose (and use) engaging bilingual books
Lead with interest, not levels. Reader choice is a reliable lever for motivation! Offer 3–4 options by topic (dinosaurs, football, mysteries, or whatever your child likes). If you land on something they enjoy, get more of the same type!
Prioritise clear design. Look for side-by-side translations, consistent fonts, and uncluttered pages so the meaning is easy to track.
Mix “comfort + stretch.” Read the stronger language on a page first to anchor the plot and ensure comprehension, then reread lines or sections in the target language.
